Job description
6 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• An experienced Legal Professional is required to join a Local Authority Legal Services team on a temporary basis to provide specialist legal advice and representation
• The role will focus on areas relating to safeguarding, family support, and wider public sector governance.
• This is a full-time assignment based on-site, ideal for an individual confident in delivering high-quality legal work within a fast-paced public sector environment.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Provide high-quality legal advice, representation and support to client departments, particularly in the area of safeguarding and family law.
• Represent the authority in court proceedings and tribunals, including case preparation and advocacy as required.
• Manage a caseload of complex and sensitive legal matters independently, ensuring deadlines are met and risks are mitigated.
• Draft and review legal documents, including court applications, contracts, and formal correspondence.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, case law and best practice.
• Work collaboratively with other legal professionals and stakeholders within the council and externally.
• Ensure compliance with professional standards, council policies and procedures.
Skills/Experience:
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in public sector legal work, ideally in safeguarding, family law, or child protection.
• Demonstrable experience of handling complex legal caseloads with minimal supervision.
• Strong knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Children Act 1989/2004, Care Act 2014, and related case law.
• Excellent communication, drafting, and negotiation skills.
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
• Familiarity with court processes, advocacy, and case management systems in the public sector.
