Job description
3 Months Contract with a Local Authority
Job Purpose
- The SENDIST Appeals Manager will be responsible for leading and managing the Council’s parental Appeals to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST). This includes coordinating the process, procedures, and data linked to the appeals, case managing individual appeals, providing expert advice to the Council and SEND Officers, and representing the Local Authority at appeal hearings.
Key Duties/Accountabilities
- Lead and manage the appeals process for the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Service to the SENDIST
- Work collaboratively with SEND Officers and manage queries related to Tribunal processes
- Develop appropriate policies, procedures, and systems in relation to complaints, disputes, and appeals
- Undertake appeals, work in line with statutory requirements, and represent the Local Authority at appeal hearings
- Make decisions on behalf of the Local Authority in relation to appeals and complaints
- Work with parents and their appointed legal representatives to mediate and try to reach resolution without the need for formal Tribunal
Essential Experience Required
- Significant experience of SEN Appeals and Tribunals
- Experience of working under pressure and re-prioritizing to meet competing demands and tight deadlines
- Experience of working with education settings and parents/young people
- Experience of successfully managing conflict and disputes in difficult situations
- Experience of effectively negotiating resolutions
- Experience of providing support, advice, and guidance to education settings and families on disabilities
- Substantial legal experience or an equivalent legal qualification or substantial relevant experience in SEN
Essential Qualification Required
- Educated to degree level or equivalent or at least three years of experience in the field of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

- Working hours: 36 hours per week
- HCPC Registration is required
- Enhanced DBS & barred list check (Child & adult) required
