Job description
1 Weeks Contract with A Local Authority
To undertake a wide range of highly skilled electrical tasks within domestic properties in accordance with current Quality Control Criteria (QCC) standards. This includes maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical systems and components. The role also involves certifying completed works, ensuring accurate record-keeping, and compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and Council policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a wide range of professional electrical services across all contracts managed by Building Services.
- Lead small teams (up to 5 tradespeople) where required, coordinating with other trades to complete works efficiently.
- Carry out and certify domestic electrical repairs and installations in compliance with all regulations (acknowledging personal responsibility under current law).
- Complete NICEIC certification (or equivalent) for all relevant works.
- Maintain and operate electrical testing equipment, including arranging annual calibrations.
- Assess test results and take necessary actions, including recommending evacuations or involving emergency services.
- Work accurately from engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Supervise, train, and mentor apprentices, trainees, and work experience individuals as directed.
- Drive and operate designated vehicles; maintain valid licences and certifications.
- Ensure security and safe storage of all vehicles and tools, especially overnight.
- Carry out minor maintenance and cleaning of equipment, reporting any defects promptly.
- Ensure all tools, equipment, ladders, and electrical gear are PAT tested and fit for use.
- Coordinate with line managers and admin staff regarding job orders and any necessary variations.
- Communicate directly with residents and client officers, offering professional advice and initiating variations where required.
- Record all work completed, using Schedule of Rates (SOR), to support billing and project accounting.
- Use handheld and IT equipment competently in accordance with training.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels of materials as outlined by Quality Management Systems.
- Adhere strictly to Health & Safety legislation and Building Services’ RED FOLDER induction protocols.
- Be vigilant about the potential presence of asbestos and follow proper procedures if discovered.
- Ensure public safety and welfare during all works carried out.
- Respond promptly to emergency call-outs, including during borough-wide emergencies.
- Stay up to date with industry developments and attend all mandatory training as required.
- Contribute to staff meetings, Quality Management initiatives, and continuous service improvement.
- Adhere to all Council policies, including Equal Opportunities, Customer Care, Health and Safety, and the corporate values of the department.
NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent
City & Guilds 2391 or 2394/2395 – Inspection & Testing Certificate
Current ECS/JIB Card (or equivalent)
Full, clean UK driving licence
Experience working in domestic electrical environments
Proven ability to complete certification (NICEIC or equivalent) accurately
Strong understanding of current IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
