Job description

3 months contract with local authority

We are seeking a Building Surveyor to join our Task and Finishing Team (TFT) and provide professional surveying and technical services for the audit of specific ‘high-risk’ major works projects carried out on the London Borough of Southwark’s (LBS) social housing estates. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of building construction and practices, and will be responsible for providing expert advice on the management of major works projects, conducting detailed reviews of feasibility studies, and engaging with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of projects.

Responsibilities

  1. Act as an expert in the building surveying professional field, providing in-depth knowledge and expertise in building construction and practices.
  2. Conduct detailed reviews of feasibility studies and design criteria for future major works projects to ensure robustness, accuracy, and suitability.
  3. Provide professional advice on the management of major works projects from inception to completion, including programming of works and supervision of contractors to ensure on-budget, timely, and high-quality delivery.
  4. Offer expert building and technical advice for the repair, maintenance, and refurbishment of homes on the LBS’ social housing estates.
  5. Undertake condition and structural surveys, post-inspections, and assessments of completed works, providing technical advice and recommendations to the TFT.
  6. Engage with LBS staff, internal stakeholders, business units, external agencies, and contractors to assist in the audit of ‘high-risk’ projects.
  7. Evaluate the effectiveness of contract types, contractors, products, and consultants, and make recommendations for changes or developments to provide best value.
  8. Evaluate the quality and efficiency of the contract administration and management of specific projects, ensuring financial and audit compliance.
  9. Work as part of a dedicated team to undertake time-limited specific audits of ‘high-risk’ major works projects.
  10. Maintain customer-centered standards, including dealing with the public, solving problems, and managing complaints. Respond to all correspondence and telephone calls from stakeholders or other interested parties relating to the works/repairs, consulting with senior staff where necessary.
  11. Compile detailed and comprehensive written reports for managers, Elected Members, and responses to complaints.


Requirements

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Surveying or related field.
  • Professional accreditation or membership with a relevant institution (e.g., RICS).
  • Proven experience in building surveying and technical services.
  • In-depth knowledge of building construction and practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
