Job description

5-6 months contract with a Local Authority

Job Summary:

•The Senior Public Protection Officer plays a leading role in the delivery of a high-quality, customer-focused enforcement and compliance service within the Public Protection function.

•The postholder is responsible for managing complex casework, providing technical leadership in defined areas, and driving forward service improvement through robust project management.

•This role requires collaboration with key stakeholders and partners to ensure public protection objectives are met effectively and efficiently.


Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):

•Lead on specialist enforcement, compliance and project work within designated areas of Public Protection.

•Act as a technical lead, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and best practice.

•Manage and progress enforcement cases, ensuring legal compliance and the successful resolution of cases, including prosecutions where appropriate.

•Support the management team by contributing to policy development, performance monitoring, and service delivery improvements.

•Represent the service at meetings with internal and external stakeholders, committees, forums, and working groups.

•Foster strong partnership working with local businesses, residents, agencies, and other council departments.

•Mentor and support colleagues, promoting a culture of continuous learning and development.

•Lead and manage projects from initiation through to completion, ensuring timely and effective outcomes.

•Ensure full compliance with financial, health and safety, and data protection procedures.

•Contribute to the delivery of service and corporate performance targets.


Skills/Experience:

•Proven experience in managing multi-disciplinary enforcement programmes and public protection workstreams.

•Demonstrated success in delivering complex projects and achieving legal compliance through to prosecution.

•Strong ability to work with members, stakeholders, residents, and external organisations.

•Knowledge and experience of the democratic process, including preparing reports for committees and working groups.

•Effective use of ICT systems including MS Office applications, GIS, mobile apps and tools.

•Experience with procurement and audit-compliant record-keeping.

•Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including outside normal office hours as required.

•High level of communication skills, including influencing and negotiation.

•Commitment to service improvement and transformation.
