2-3 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• The Public Protection Officer plays a key role within the Public Protection Service, delivering high-quality, customer-focused compliance and enforcement work across defined technical areas.
• The postholder supports service improvement through proactive casework, robust project support, and effective stakeholder engagement.
• This role involves the investigation of service requests, carrying out inspections, and contributing to the delivery of performance targets, ensuring all work aligns with legislative and corporate objectives.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Respond to and investigate service requests within allocated public protection areas.
• Conduct proactive work including inspections, audits, and sampling programmes to ensure legal compliance.
• Manage and progress a varied caseload, achieving effective outcomes and meeting statutory obligations.
• Support the delivery of projects from inception to completion, under the direction of Public Protection Managers.
• Work collaboratively with members, residents, businesses, and partner agencies.
• Maintain technical knowledge in designated areas, ensuring compliance with current legislation and best practice.
• Represent the service at meetings, committees, and external working groups as required.
• Order and manage equipment and materials in line with financial and audit requirements.
• Promote a strong health and safety culture in line with statutory and organisational policies.
• Uphold the organisation’s values in delivering a responsive, inclusive, and efficient service.
• Use ICT systems effectively to support mobile working, service performance monitoring, and data management.
Skills/Experience:
• Experience managing a multi-disciplinary enforcement caseload in a regulatory setting.
• Proven ability to work within various areas of public protection (e.g. environmental health, licensing, trading standards).
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience liaising with residents, elected members, external agencies, and business partners.
• Track record of achieving statutory compliance, including progressing enforcement actions to prosecution.
• Experience supporting service improvement and transformation initiatives.
• Proficient in the use of ICT systems including MS Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, GIS and mobile working tools.
• Knowledge of performance monitoring processes and quality management systems.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and report writing skills.
• Ability to balance workloads, manage deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
