Job Summary:
• We are seeking an experienced Paralegal to join the Legal SARs Team within the Local Authority.
• The primary responsibility of this role will be to assist with reviewing and redacting Social Care files in response to Subject Access Requests (SARs) under the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR.
• The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring that sensitive information is handled with confidentiality and in compliance with data protection regulations.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Reviewing Social Care Files: Carefully examine and assess Social Care files to determine the scope of information that can be disclosed in response to SARs.
• Redaction of Sensitive Information: Redact personal data, confidential information, and third-party data from Social Care files to ensure compliance with data protection requirements before disclosure.
• Compliance with Data Protection Legislation: Ensure all actions comply with the Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR, and relevant case law.
• Prepare Documentation: Draft and prepare responses to SARs, including detailed records of decisions on redactions and information disclosed.
• Liaising with Stakeholders: Communicate with Social Care teams and other departments to clarify file contents and confirm redactions, ensuring accurate and timely responses.
• Reporting: Maintain accurate records of SAR requests and outcomes, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory deadlines.
• Assist in Investigations: Support legal colleagues in the investigation of complaints and any legal proceedings related to the disclosure of personal data.
• Ad hoc support: Provide general support to the Legal SARs team as required, assisting in other legal matters related to childcare law and data protection.
Skills/Experience:
• Proven experience as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant, preferably with experience in Childcare Law or data protection matters, such as Subject Access Requests.
• Familiarity with Social Care files, Child Protection issues, and understanding of sensitive data handling.
• Strong understanding of the Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR, and the legal framework surrounding Subject Access Requests.
• Familiarity with legal terminology and concepts related to childcare law.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with sensitive and confidential information.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Organisational skills, with the ability to manage a caseload and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with case management systems.
• Knowledge of redaction techniques and experience in file review processes is desirable.
Additional Information:
• A relevant legal qualification (such as a paralegal certification or law degree) is preferred but not required if the candidate has significant relevant experience.
