2-3 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• To support the Senior Property Lawyer in ensuring that the Council receives cost-effective high-quality property related legal advice, and in providing an advisory property and regeneration service.
• To ensure that all such work is carried out to the requirements of relevant clients and to appropriate professional standards.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• To undertake all work including, amongst other matters, to ensure the provision of high-quality cost-effective specialist legal advice guidance and support in the field of property law including residential and commercial conveyancing, development agreements, landlord and tenant matters, compulsory purchase and other related work including advice, preparing orders and notices, drafting and similar agreements and legal work necessary for the performance of the teams’ functions.
• To provide legal advice to committees, sub-committees and working parties and to write reports to such bodies or provide legal advice on such reports as required by the Senior Regeneration Lawyer from time to time.
• To provide advice to the Council on changes in legislation and case law that may have an impact on the Council and to keep up to date with new and proposed legislation, new cases and other developments which may have an impact on the Council.
• To undertake tasks and projects as allocated by the Senior Regeneration Lawyer in accordance with instructions.
• To maintain effective relationships with client departments.
• To assist in the development of and to operate and be conversant with all information technology systems used for the work of the team.
• To ensure that performance targets set by the Senior Regeneration Lawyer are met.
• To undertake any other duties that may be required to meet the exigencies of the service, and these may be varied from time to time to meet the needs of the service.
• To carry out the duties of the post about the Council's Equal Opportunities Policies and Anti-Racist Strategies. To undergo such training as may be required in respect of these policies.
• To carry out all duties in accordance with the Council's Policies, Standing Orders, Codes of Practice, Financial Regulations and undergo such training as may be required.
• To provide legal advice to committees, sub-committees and working parties and to write reports to such bodies or provide legal advice on such reports as required by the Senior Regeneration Lawyer from time to time.
• To participate as directed by the Senior Regeneration Lawyer/ Head of Legal Services in the recruitment of staff.
• To demonstrate substantial experience of legal work within the post holder’s area of responsibility and ability to demonstrate significant specialism or depth of knowledge in a particular area.
• To make a professional evaluation of all legal aspects with minimal supervision and guidance.
• To present complex arguments before committees or sub-committees effectively.
• To liaise effectively with clients and instill confidence and trust in respect of service provision.
• To supervise trainees and other staff who may be assigned to the team on a permanent or temporary basis.
• To represent Legal Services on corporate projects and initiatives involving both legal and policy work at a senior level as and when required.
Skills/Experience:
• Thorough up to date knowledge of all aspects of property law including residential and commercial conveyancing and development agreements.
• Post qualification experience working as a solicitor/barrister in the field of property law preferably in local government.
• Attendance at committees, sub committees and demonstrable experience in preparation of report writing.
• Sustained and successful experience of working in a Legal department in a customer focused organisation.
• Substantial experience working as a solicitor/barrister in the field of property law preferably in local government.

Additional Information:
• The closing date: 11/04/2025 @16:00.
• Admitted as a barrister or solicitor in the UK holding a current practice certificate.
• The role is hybrid. The candidate will be expected to attend the office at least once a month for team meetings and when they have completions.
