Summary:
We are seeking a full-time, experienced, and qualified lawyer to join our team. This role is pivotal in delivering high-quality legal advice to clients, ensuring adherence to statutory requirements, and promoting lawful and transparent operations within the Council. The position is essential for upholding legal integrity and supporting the Council's activities through expert legal guidance.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and services to the Council, its Members, and client departments, ensuring compliance with local government law.
- Attend court to carry out advocacy as required.
- Demonstrate an understanding of equal opportunities and address the diverse needs of individuals.
- Adhere to the Council’s policies, including safeguarding, financial regulations, equality promotion, customer care, audit actions, and health and safety.
- Supervise junior team members and support their development.
- Assist senior lawyers in drafting reports and providing advice for the Cabinet and Council Committees, attending meetings as needed.
- Contribute to achieving the Council’s objectives and priorities.
- Support the team in meeting income targets.
- Monitor legal changes, update policies and processes, and inform client departments accordingly.
- Respond promptly and professionally to queries, ensuring effective communication.
- Maintain accurate digital and physical records of all work, including time records.
- Collaborate with other teams and support the training and development of colleagues and clients.
Requirements
Requirements:
- Legal qualification and relevant experience in providing legal advice within a governmental or similar setting.
- Strong understanding of local government law and statutory compliance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to supervise and mentor junior staff.
- Proficiency in maintaining detailed records and using case management systems.
- Flexibility to work outside normal hours when required, with appropriate compensation.
