1 month contract with a Local Authority

Job Summary:

• We are seeking a dedicated Street Scene & Waste Operative to help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming neighbourhoods across the city.

• This is a physically active role focused on waste and recycling collection, grounds maintenance, and cleansing of public areas.

• The postholder will work as part of a frontline team to deliver high standards of environmental cleanliness, adhering to health and safety standards and customer service expectations.

Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):

• Collect various types of waste and recycling from residential, commercial properties, and public areas in line with environmental regulations and service standards

• Cleanse public land and highways, removing spillages, litter, and fly tipping where necessary

• Safely remove hazardous waste and ensure areas are left clean, including replacing bins where appropriate

• Undertake grounds maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, and using pedestrian mowers or strimmers

• Operate in accordance with Codes of Practice, health and safety guidelines, and the Highway Code

• Report unsafe working practices or incidents to the Assistant Team Leader

• Follow work schedules and complete assigned duties within specified timescales

• Provide a polite and professional service to residents and members of the public

Skills/Experience:

• Experience in labour-intensive or manual roles, preferably in waste collection, street cleansing or a recycling facility

• Understanding of health and safety practices in operational environments

• Functional skills in English and Maths at Level 1 or the ability to follow written and verbal instructions

• Knowledge of customer care standards and ability to engage tactfully with the public

• Awareness of road safety and traffic regulations relevant to the role

• Physically fit and capable of lifting, pulling, and pushing bins or equipment

• Manual Handling training

• Able to use specialist tools or machinery following training (e.g. strimmers, mowers)

Additional Information:

• This is a mobile working role, involving regular outdoor work across various city locations.
