Job description
7 Month Contract With A Local Authority
The Anatomical Pathogen Technician is responsible for supporting anatomical pathology and infectious agent analysis through specimen preparation, tissue processing, histological techniques, and pathogen containment procedures. This role ensures the safe handling, preparation, and testing of biological specimens for diagnostic, research, and teaching purposes while maintaining strict compliance with biosafety and laboratory quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Receive, label, and process anatomical specimens for histopathological and microbiological examination.
Assist in the preparation and staining of tissue sections, including paraffin embedding, microtomy, and special stains.
Support the isolation and identification of pathogens from anatomical specimens under BSL-2/BSL-3 conditions.
Maintain and operate laboratory equipment such as microtomes, centrifuges, and autoclaves.
Implement and monitor biosafety procedures, ensuring adherence to infection control and containment standards.
Record and maintain accurate laboratory data, results, and chain-of-custody documentation.
Collaborate with pathologists, microbiologists, and research staff in diagnostic and investigative procedures.
Ensure proper storage and disposal of hazardous materials and biological waste.
Participate in quality control, calibration, and laboratory audit processes.
Stay current with advancements in anatomical pathology and pathogen detection methodologies.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Microbiology, or related field.
(Preferred) Certification or training in histotechnology or pathogen containment (e.g., HT/HTL, BSL certification).
1–3 years of experience in a histopathology, microbiology, or biomedical laboratory environment.
Experience handling infectious materials and human/animal tissue specimens preferred.
Knowledge of anatomical dissection, histological preparation, and staining techniques.
Familiarity with pathogen detection assays (PCR, immunohistochemistry, culture).
Understanding of biosafety protocols and containment levels (BSL-2/BSL-3).
Competence with laboratory information systems (LIS) and digital record management.
Strong attention to detail and adherence to procedural accuracy.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills.
